Quiz!! Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon
Okay, this doesn't really have anything to do with my webcomic at all, but, just to make things interesting, I thought I'd
add a short description of, of all things, a Japanese arcade quiz game based on Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon with the
rather lengthy title of Kuizu!! Bishoujo Senshi Seeraa Muun - Chiryouku, Tairyoku, Toki no Un, which roughly
translates into English as the overly dramatic and incomprehensible Quiz!! Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon - Intellectual
Power, Physical Strength, Time of Destiny. As popular as video games centered around the series tend to be, this
existence of this one has remained practically unknown to the (online) Sailor Moon fan community...well, until now, that is. ^_^;
Since I speak no Japanese whatsoever I have absolutely no idea what the plot is supposed to be, but from what I can tell,
it appears to be extremely loosely based on Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon S, as the villains and monsters from that
season are prominently featured throughout.
Below is a modified version of the map screen, which I've edited in order to show all of the existing areas in the game.
Starting from the bottom and going clockwise, they are The Residential Area, The Bottom of the Ocean, The
Pyramid, The Pastureland, Snow Country, and The Graveyard. Only once these six courses have been
completed does the seventh and final one, the Tomoe Mansion, finally appear and become accessible to the player.
After a brief intro showing the Sailor Soldiers spiralling down towards what appears to be some kind of super-deformed
version of Japan as a result of Professor Tomoe's machinations and the player selects both a character from the seven
available ones (Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, Sailor Uranus, or Sailor Neptune)
as well as a starting stage, the real fun begins...theoretically. The game itself is rather straightforward and mundane,
really: after rolling a virtual die in order to find out how many spaces forward you can progress, you proceed to "battle"
your way through a course by answering a series of multiple choice questions, the trivia you're faced with running the
gamut from sports to television to ones about the series itself. Right answers earn you points and slowly charges up an
energy meter, which, when full, allows you to lay some serious smackdown upon your enemy's sorry ass with one of your
character's patented magical attacks. Wrong answers will eventually cost you a quarter. Oh, the horror of it all. ^_^;
Following each minor victory, you're given the choice of turning over one of four cards, initially selected at random and
each marked with one of seven possible planetary glyphs. Once a four-way match is achieved, Sailor Pluto will descend from
somewhere offscreen with a new ally for you, namely the Sailor Soldier whose home planet is represented by the "suit" of
the cards. Each one of your teammates has the ability to facilitate your progress in their own unique ways - Sailor Mercury,
for example, help you respond to questions by recommending an answer along the percentage probability of it being correct -
so it's in your best interest to gather up as many of your allies as quickly as possible! Of course, Hotaru, Chibi Usa, and
Tuxedo Mask will always be around to offer advice or otherwise provide assistance along the way...
If my description of the game sounds somewhat uninspired, that's probably because it was rather tedious and boring for me
to play through because I had absolutely no idea what the hell I was doing. :P Trust me, playing a game in a language you
can't understand with one-in-four odds of getting a question right amounts to a little more than a guessing game that gets
extremely stale after you get the one-hundredth or so answer wrong. >_<; Even so, what makes this game worth your while is
the wonderful animation and artwork that you run across while playing it, which is the reason why this page exists. :)
Animated Sprites
Arguably the most endearing quality of Quiz!! Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon - Intellectual Power, Physical Strength, Time
of Destiny is the nauseatingly cute character artwork used throughout the game. The following series of animated GIFs
were created from dozens of sprite rips taken from the game using a combination of Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft GIF
Animator, and Adobe Photoshop. They can be freely used by anyone reading this provided that I'm credited with a
link somewhere on that person's website. I worked damn hard to make them so you'd better give me my just due...or else. :P
